Ox Alpha is the mystery model of the week, and nobody will claim it. The free reasoning system surfaced on OpenRouter on Thursday, pitched for coding, sustained agentic work and production workloads.
Patrick Collison, the Stripe CEO whose company is acquiring OpenRouter, called it very impressive. The listing itself says a third-party provider chose to stay anonymous for the preview.
Speculation has run in two directions. Analyst Andrew Curran notes that early theories centered on Z.ai’s GLM family before confidence wobbled. Wccftech first pointed at GLM, then amended its piece to suggest an unreleased Microsoft MAI variant. On Reddit, certainty is split between those sure it cannot be Chinese and those convinced it is.
The anonymity is a strategy as much as a choice. The model gets a public stress test and free attention, while competitors are left to guess whether a new frontier lab just materialized overnight.
