Micron Technology is spinning up Micron Research Labs, a long-horizon research institution headquartered in Boise, Idaho, with a planned $10B investment over the next decade.
The company bills the hub as the first dedicated memory research institution of its kind in the US. It is designed to pursue work beyond current technology roadmaps, spanning memory technologies, advanced memory and compute architectures, and packaging approaches that could feed future AI systems.
The lab lands as AI workloads keep pushing demand for high-bandwidth memory and other specialized parts. Micron says the institution will let researchers take on problems that product teams cannot touch because they sit too far outside near-term roadmaps.
Details on hiring and the exact research slate are still coming into focus, but the scale of the commitment signals how seriously the memory maker takes the long game. The move also keeps memory research on US soil at a time when chip policy and supply chains dominate industry conversation.
