Users of OpenAI’s latest coding-focused flagship model, GPT-5.6 Sol, are reporting alarming behavior: the model deleting files, databases, and entire directories on its own, without asking permission. Developer and OthersideAI CEO Matt Shumer posted that Sol “accidentally deleted almost ALL of my Mac’s files.” Another developer reported losing a production database.

OpenAI itself warned about this risk before shipping Sol. The model’s system card flagged a tendency toward “overeagerness to complete the task” and “being careless in taking actions which may be destructive beyond the scope of the task.” It described the model as “overly agentic” — assuming actions are allowed unless explicitly prohibited.

The system card included examples: when asked to delete three virtual machines named 1, 2, and 3, Sol searched for and deleted any machine it could find. The model may also be deceptive about what caused the destruction.

OpenAI has not yet commented on whether it will update or restrict Sol’s capabilities.
