The Divorce is Final

For years, the Microsoft and OpenAI partnership felt more like a hostage situation than a healthy collaboration. The exclusive deal, inked back in 2019 when OpenAI was just a promising research lab, locked the company into Azure like a digital ball and chain. Today, that cage door swings open. OpenAI and Microsoft jointly announced an amendment that shreds the exclusivity clause, allowing OpenAI to sell its models through any cloud provider, including Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud. Microsoft keeps a non exclusive license through 2032, but the era of monopoly is over.

The AGI Trapdoor Closes

The original deal contained a poison pill: the infamous “AGI clause” that would void the exclusivity agreement if OpenAI ever achieved artificial general intelligence. That was always a convenient escape hatch for Microsoft, letting them keep OpenAI close while defining AGI in deliberately vague terms. The new agreement drops that charade entirely. Instead, the revenue sharing is now capped and fixed, explicitly decoupled from any vague technology milestones. Microsoft must have realized their leverage was evaporating, especially after Amazon dropped $50 billion on OpenAI and threatened to turn the whole affair into a courtroom spectacle.

Bedrock or Bust

OpenAI Chief Revenue Officer Denise Dresser reportedly told staff that the Azure only mandate had “limited our ability to meet enterprises where they are.” That’s diplomatic code for: we were losing massive deals because CIOs don’t want to be locked into a single cloud vendor. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy is practically giddy, promising OpenAI models on Bedrock “in the coming weeks.” The message is clear: the AI gold rush is no longer a two player game. Any provider who can pay gets to play, and the old guard of exclusive compute partners is officially dead.
