The quarterly returns are in, and the bill for artificial intelligence is landing on the income statement. Meta, Amazon and Alphabet each reported negative free cash flow for the period, leaving Microsoft as the only one of the four still generating surplus.
Meta’s outflow reached $2.12B. Amazon’s hit $42.4B. Alphabet’s came to $9.07B. Microsoft stayed positive at $18.63B, a 27 percent drop from a year earlier, and said it will borrow in the bond market to keep building.
Spending guidance tells the same story. Amazon expects about $220B in capital expenditure this year, with analysts projecting above $280B next year. Meta puts its 2026 figure near $145B and plans to raise $95B in stock. Alphabet and Amazon both face slower growth in the advertising and retail businesses that are supposed to pay for it all.
The strain showed in share prices. Alphabet fell 12 percent on Thursday, its worst single session, erasing roughly $500B in market value. Amazon dropped in extended trading after missing revenue guidance for a quarter that includes the holiday season.
Rising rates make the arithmetic harder for smaller players. Neoclouds borrow to buy chips and resell compute, so a higher cost of capital compresses them first. For the megacaps, the buffer is the legacy franchise. Advertising and e-commerce can fund a data center for a while. They cannot fund a decade of it.
