NYU Langone puts OpenEvidence answers inside its Epic records

Clinicians across 12.4M annual outpatient visits can now ask a medical AI a question without leaving the chart

NYU Langone Health and OpenEvidence said Thursday they had embedded the medical AI platform directly inside the health system’s Epic electronic health record.

The integration is called Patient Aware Clinical Intelligence. Clinicians can ask a complicated question in plain language without leaving the chart, and the response draws on published evidence while accounting for who the patient is. The announcement frames the aim as putting the best available evidence in front of care teams in New York City, Long Island and further afield.

The reach is the point. The system sees 12.4M outpatient encounters annually, plus north of 421,000 emergency visits, spread over seven hospitals and 400-plus clinic sites in the New York region and Florida. Roughly 54,000 people work there. The Family Health Centers, among the biggest federally qualified health center networks nationally, account for upwards of 100,000 patients and about 600,000 visits. Deployment covers hospitals, the ambulatory network and the trainee ranks at both medical schools.

Keeping the question inside the chart matters for adoption. Tools that require a second browser tab tend to lose to whatever is already on screen during a fifteen-minute visit.

OpenEvidence has been sewing up these deals since September, with Memorial Sloan Kettering, UT Medical Branch and AdventHealth all announcing integrations. Adding patient context is the harder claim. An answer that cites the literature is checkable; an answer that merges the literature with one person’s labs and history is doing something clinicians must verify more carefully, and the announcement leans on the evidence link as the safeguard.
