Musk predicts a cull of 200 neoclouds as debt markets close

The SpaceX chief says credit has shut off for compute landlords without revenue that stands on its own.

Elon Musk put a number on the neocloud shakeout. Replying on X to investor Chamath Palihapitiya, the SpaceX and Tesla chief executive said debt markets have almost entirely closed to companies without substantial revenue independent of AI data centers, and that “200+ neoclouds are going to see guppy-level death and consolidation.”

His incentives are worth noting. SpaceX sells computing capacity from its own data centers, putting it in direct competition with the businesses he was describing.

Palihapitiya’s framing was about inventory. He expects far more partially stranded compute sitting unsold in 2027 than forecasts assume, bought and paid for but underearning or collecting dust, and called next year a clearing-out period.

The market has already voted. CoreWeave and Nebius are down more than 30 percent over the past month and Iren has dropped 40 percent, a slide that began when the spread on CoreWeave’s five-year credit default swaps reached levels typically read as distress. Nebius and Iren shares rebounded later on the day of Musk’s post.

Nvidia is trying to steady the sector it supplies. At GTC Berlin, chief executive Jensen Huang told CNBC that demand from neoclouds is off the charts, and that the missing piece is working capital, not customers. Nebius chief revenue officer Marc Boroditsky said his company does not carry CoreWeave’s debt load and would sell out its 2027 capacity.
