Every open tab is now visible to ChatGPT, and the updated Chrome extension from OpenAI can compare what is on them and act inside the browser.
@chrome is the handle that aims the assistant at a tab, and several at once can feed chat mode. Work mode does more. Grouping tabs is one option it gets through computer use, along with downloading files, completing forms and sending messages.
OpenAI supplies its own examples, and they are consumer-grade. Price pages from different sellers get lined up, plain-language summaries of articles are produced, and products are weighed against each other by return rules, material, shipping time and size. Chat history has moved into the upgraded sidebar, sitting beside the page being viewed.
Access comes with every ChatGPT plan, which is the real signal. Rather than a premium tier, browser context is being treated as table stakes, and the assistant moves one layer closer to the operating system of the web.
A permission question the demo does not answer follows from that, and GPT-6 Astra is the computer use model OpenAI rates highest for multi-step workflows. Action-taking and tab access together amount to a broad grant, and what guardrails exist between a page carrying instructions and a model inclined to follow them has not been spelled out by the company.
