Apple announced HomeView, its first smart display, a $299 hub built around Siri and the company’s AI services.
The device anchors a broader home push announced alongside it. A second-generation HomePod Mini and a refreshed Apple TV 4K arrived in the same batch, the set-top box gaining a newer chip and hands-free voice control.
Apple has been the conspicuous absence in the smart home for years. Amazon and Google shipped displays and speakers at scale while Apple sold the HomePod as an audio product and left the automation layer to third-party apps and a HomeKit framework that developers found cumbersome.
Placing Siri at the center changes the company’s role. A screen in a shared room becomes a surface for assistance, not just a speaker with a microphone, and it gives Apple a device that can hold a conversational context across household members.
A wall-mounted variant of HomeView was also shown, aimed at permanent installation rather than shelf placement.
Success depends on whether Siri can carry the interaction. Apple’s assistant trails rivals in open-ended tasks, and a display makes that gap more visible than a speaker does.
