Paying for access to the better AI models is becoming the norm, and Google is the latest to make the switch. Under changes landing this month, personal accounts without a subscription get only Flash-Lite, the smallest model in the Gemini family.
Flash and Pro move behind the paywall. The outgoing free tier had been more open, offering 3.6 Flash and some access to 3.1 Pro, so this is a reduction rather than an expansion.
Price tiers follow the same logic. The $4.99 AI Plus plan gives up Pro, and reaching all three models now takes AI Pro at $19.99 a month or AI Ultra, priced from $99.99 to $199.99.
It is a familiar shape. OpenAI already reserves its strongest models for higher ChatGPT tiers.
The likely motive is cost, plus a coming release. A more expensive model to serve, Gemini 4 Argon, is expected. Most people never notice which model is answering, and heavy users largely pay already, so the everyday effect may stay slight.
