Restate has raised a $20M Series A led by Singular, with Redpoint Ventures and Capital One Ventures joining, the Berlin company said.
Founder Stephan Ewen started the company in 2022 to build an execution engine that keeps multistep workflows alive through crashes and network interruptions. Agents were not the target. They turned out to be the perfect match.
Agents changed the requirements. Their jobs run far longer than ordinary software and wander down unpredictable paths, so a run that dies halfway can leave a system in an unknown state.
Durability is the answer. Every step has to be recorded, replayable and consistent before work resumes, which is heavier plumbing than most teams first expect.
Restate says it has signed multiple six- and seven-figure contracts in recent months. Customers include Replit. Rather than layering its engine on an external database, it built its own storage, replication and redundancy, which the company says keeps it fast and light.
The target is Temporal, which defined the category and raised a $550M Series E at a $12.55B valuation earlier this month. Restate is far smaller and undercuts on cost for lighter workflows.
The category is widening as agents leave the demo stage. Keeping long-running work from losing its place is shifting from a specialty tool to baseline infrastructure.
