A neocloud bets on inference silicon and walks away with fresh capital

General Compute reached an $800M valuation by renting bitcoin sites and buying chips everyone else ignored.

Announcing a $100M Series A for an AI cloud is awkward timing. CoreWeave shares are near a 12-month low, and Elon Musk has been predicting carnage among the smaller compute providers.

Finn Puklowski is not moved. General Compute’s co-founder and chief executive calls the collapse fears overstated, and says he fields weekly calls from buyers hunting GPUs, TPUs or any silicon at all. Anthropic’s buoyant filing, he adds, has calmed nerves for now.

The company’s edge is that it never chased GPUs. It built on inference accelerators from Nvidia’s rivals, starting with a $400M purchase from SambaNova and later adding Positron and Cerebras as suppliers.

It also avoids the capital sink of building campuses. General Compute rents space inside other operators’ data centers, leans on smaller power sources, and converts retired bitcoin mining sites into AI facilities.

A single customer contract worth $100M in annual recurring revenue made the raise possible. Blackbird Ventures and Abstract Ventures co-led the round, which values the startup at $800M post-money, up from $60M after a May seed.

The model has ceilings. General Compute will not rival hyperscalers soon, and Puklowski concedes that financing is now effectively his full-time job. He expects to deploy 75 megawatts in 2027 and believes he can secure access to 200.

Investor conviction traces to inference demand rather than a data center footprint. Blackbird principal James Palmer points to his firm’s Baseten stake and argues the new chipmakers each need a distribution partner that can reach scale.
