Disney hires most of Character.AI after its bankruptcy filing

A court filing shows Disney will offer jobs to at least 60 Character.AI employees at roughly $60M in annual pay, with a stalking horse bid still open to rivals.

Character.AI filed for Chapter 11 protection this week. Within days, most of its staff had somewhere to land, and the destination was the company already positioned to buy its assets.

A legal filing reviewed by Bloomberg lays out the arrangement. Disney committed to employment offers for at least 60 people at the chatbot startup, with estimated annual compensation near $60M. The vast majority of those approached accepted.

The hiring runs alongside a stalking horse agreement worth $20M. That mechanism sets a floor price rather than a final one, so a competing bidder could still top Disney’s offer. Character.AI says the platform keeps running while the sale proceeds.

The human capital is arguably the more valuable piece. Character.AI’s former chief executive, Karandeep Anand, recently became the entertainment company’s first chief technology officer. Hiring the rank and file clears a path for Disney to fold the startup’s team directly into its own AI effort.

The filing is blunt about what broke. Character.AI had what it described as a large and engaged user base, but ran into high operating costs and exposed itself to potential litigation liabilities and regulatory engagement. It was sued by the mother of a 14-year-old who became fixated on one of its chatbots before his death, and faces government investigations over child safety.

That combination, expensive inference and legal exposure, is a hard one to fund on consumer subscriptions alone. The Chapter 11 route lets a solvent buyer take the technology and the people while leaving the liabilities inside a sale process that creditors and courts oversee.
