One of Anthropic’s biggest coding customers says it has moved on. Replit chief executive Amjad Masad told the TechCrunch Disrupt stage on Thursday that his company no longer works with Anthropic.
He gave three reasons: cost, partnership and performance. Masad said OpenAI’s Sol and Astra models keep winning on Replit’s internal VBench and on a public benchmark the company publishes, particularly when building applications from a blank page.
The timing stings. Replit signed its OpenAI partnership in August while still relying on Claude models, and Masad confirmed Replit had ranked among Anthropic’s top five customers. Asked whether the exit fed into talk of an Anthropic revenue slowdown, he did not push the point away.
There is a counter-story. People familiar with the arrangement told TechCrunch the partnership remains in place. Replit’s own model selector still lists Claude Fable 5.1, Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5 as Max Mode choices alongside GPT-6 Astra.
Either way, the public message is unusual. Coding platforms rarely name a departing supplier on stage, and a startup arguing that frontier models are interchangeable cuts against the premium pricing those labs depend on.
