Israel targets 100,000 accelerators in five-year AI strategy

Israel’s AI ambitions now come with specific targets. A five-year strategic plan released August 13 commits the government to a national computing base of at least 100,000 advanced AI accelerators, a domestically built quantum computer, and an advanced chip fabrication facility at 5-nanometer technology or below.

The National Artificial Intelligence Directorate inside the Prime Minister’s Office published the plan, which implements Government Resolution 4255. The cabinet approved that resolution in June under the title Accelerating Artificial Intelligence in Israel and Establishing Global Leadership.

The strategy’s organizing idea is Lived AI. Instead of racing to train the largest foundation models, which the plan says would demand compute and capital beyond a country of Israel’s size, the goal is to be the first nation to weave AI into public life across healthcare, education, and government services, while contributing distinctive strengths in cybersecurity, physical AI, applied research, and rapid real-world deployment.

Execution runs through the National Institute for impact-driven AI applications, or NIIA. It will stand up five acceleration reactors, regional labs anchored to existing centers of excellence, at least two of them in the periphery, each pairing a government or business lead with an implementation partner. The reactors work toward nine systemic goals spanning aging, inclusive growth, national security, productivity, and what the plan calls smart financial sovereignty.

Entrepreneurs and developers who build solutions keep the intellectual property, so long as those solutions see broad implementation inside Israel. The plan also calls for one implementation center focused on physical AI in health, space, and transportation, plus three new laboratories with the National Cyber Directorate covering protection of AI systems, defense against malicious AI use, and a dedicated front against synthetic forgery.
